Are you a fan of Desmond? Ubisoft says that while some Assassin’s Creed fans are, there are also some who aren’t—but that they believe the character’s payoff in Assassin’s Creed III will be worth it.
“So we’ve built [Desmond] up over the course of the games, and I really believe that we can pay that off, and in retrospect he’ll be terrific,” Assassin’s Creed creative director Alex Hutchinson told UK gaming publication Edge recently. “I don’t think anyone really liked Luke Skywalker in [Star Wars] A New Hope, but by the end of his character arc, this journey that he goes through, makes him amazing.”
Hutchinson continues on, saying that the team is hoping to give a worthwhile payoff in terms of the character to those who have been with the series since the original Assassin’s Creed. However, Hutchinson and crew also know that players who may be new to the franchise also have to be kept in mind.
“We catch you up on where he’s been pretty quickly, and it absolutely works as a standalone game, but the full payoff will be for those who’ve been with us since the start,” assures Hutchinson.

is anyone else excited about this as much as i am?

You should have been at the AC3 panel at PAX. The devs answered a question about Desmond’s involvement in the new game and the entire theatre erupted in cheers and applause. Anybody who says Desmond isn’t popular doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
